- Stainless steel: Stainless cans are the most forgiving material for cleaning. Almost any method works, but stay mindful of the solvents you use — coatings on stainless suppressors can be less resilient than the base material.
- Titanium: Titanium suppressors are lightweight and tough, and they tolerate most cleaning methods similar to stainless steel. The catch is solvent chemistry: titanium reacts poorly with acidic and chlorinated solvents, which can pit baffles over time. Use neutral-pH cleaners like Simple Green or a dedicated titanium-safe formula. Avoid ammonia-based and acidic bore cleaners on titanium cans.

Sealed suppressors (also called welded or tubeless suppressors) cannot be disassembled the way rimfire cans can. Because of how rifle and pistol ammunition works, these cans need less frequent cleaning, but they still benefit from occasional maintenance.
The best way to clean a sealed suppressor is to fill it with a suppressor-specific cleaning solvent, cap the ends, and let it soak. How to Clean a User-Serviceable Suppressor
User-serviceable suppressors come apart into their base components, giving you direct access to every part that needs attention. All rimfire suppressors and some centerfire suppressors are user-serviceable. Always check the construction material before choosing your cleaning method.
- Monocore / baffles: Depending on your suppressor’s design, the internals are either a single monocore or a stack of individual baffles. These trap most of the carbon and lead and need the most attention. A brush and solvent works for either. A plastic pick or non-marring scraping tool is useful for corners and the spaces between baffles. Pay special attention to the mating surfaces — any debris between baffles can throw off alignment on reassembly.
- Tube / end caps: The easiest parts to clean and the ones that collect the least fouling. The tube interior is shielded by the baffles or monocore, so a wipe-down or gentle scrub is usually enough. End caps just need a rag.
- Threads: A few passes with a nylon brush and a light solvent handle the threads. Make sure no debris is left behind that could affect torque or alignment on reassembly.
- Boosters: The booster and piston are the only moving parts in a suppressor. Pull the piston and booster spring from the housing, wipe everything clean, and apply a light coat of lubricant. The interface between piston and housing has to be free of debris so the piston seats correctly. Once the housing is cleaned and lubed, reassemble.
- O-rings: Usually found between the booster housing and the piston. A wipe-down and a light lube keep them functional. Ultrasonic cleaners and aggressive solvents degrade O-ring material, so always remove O-rings before either treatment.
Cleaning a Rimfire (.22) Suppressor
Rimfire suppressors are the highest-maintenance cans in the safe. Plan to clean every 300 to 500 rounds. The reason is the ammo: .22 LR fires lead bullets at low pressure, which means soft lead deposits build up inside the baffles fast and don’t get blown out by gas pressure the way carbon does in a centerfire can.
What you’re cleaning is mostly LEAD, not carbon. That changes solvent choice. Standard bore cleaners help, but white vinegar is one of the most effective and cheapest options for lead, specifically — it dissolves lead deposits on contact. Many rimfire suppressor owners use vinegar as a pretreatment, then follow up with an ultrasonic cycle or brush-and-solvent finish.
The basic rimfire cleaning workflow:
- Unscrew the end cap. Most rimfire cans have a removable front end cap; some require a suppressor wrench or a cloth-wrapped adjustable wrench. Don’t grip the suppressor body with bare pliers; the finish will mark.

Suppressor Cleaning Methods
Brush and Solvent - “The Elbow Grease Method”
An effective and gentle way to clean a suppressor: a good brush and the right solvent. This is the lowest-risk method and you probably have most of what you need already. It takes time, but you reach every nook and corner without risking damage.
What you need:

Fill the tumbler to its fill line, drop in your suppressor components, add solvent and media, and run for a few hours. The dirtier the can, the longer it tumbles. Rinse parts in hot water, wipe with a clean cloth, and confirm no media pins are stuck in threads or baffle corners.
Soda Blaster
Soda blasters use sodium bicarbonate and compressed air to physically blast lead and carbon off your suppressor parts. It’s the fastest method by far, but it requires specialized equipment and a sealed blast cabinet to contain the airborne particulates.
What you need:
- Air compressor
- Soda blaster
- Sodium bicarbonate media
- Sealed blast cabinet
- Recovery method (shop vac)
Disassemble the suppressor and place all components in the blast cabinet. Seal the cabinet and blast each part clean. Do NOT blast anodized or Cerakoted parts — the finish will erode. Use a shop vac to clear airborne particulates inside the cabinet before opening it.
Ultrasonic Cleaner
Ultrasonic cleaners use high-frequency vibration to agitate carbon and lead off your suppressor’s parts. Popular because they’re hands-off: drop the parts in and walk away. Not suitable for aluminum parts or coated tubes — the vibration combined with solvent can degrade soft materials and finishes.
What you need:
- Ultrasonic cleaner (with basket)
- Non-corrosive solvent (Simple Green or a dedicated ultrasonic suppressor formula)
Place the suppressor parts in the basket and lower it into the cleaner. Pour solvent into the tank and start the cycle. Typical times:
- Light rimfire or maintenance cleaning: 15 to 20 minutes
- Moderate centerfire carbon: 30 to 45 minutes
- Heavy lead fouling on a neglected rimfire can: multiple 30-minute cycles with fresh solvent between cycles
For titanium suppressors, use a neutral-pH, non-chlorinated, non-ammoniated cleaner. Acidic solvents can pit titanium baffles over multiple cleaning cycles. After the cycle, parts will have a filmy residue — towel it off before reassembly.
Dry Media Tumbler
Dry media tumblers use a vibrating bowl filled with coarse media (usually walnut shell or corncob) to scrub parts clean. The media is mildly abrasive and effective on stainless and titanium, but slower than wet tumbling.
What you need:
- A rotary dry tumbler
- Dry media (walnut shell or corncob)

The Dip
This method can cause bodily harm, property damage, and even death. It is the most controversial suppressor cleaning method in this list, and Silencer Shop does not recommend it under any circumstances.

The dip is extremely harmful to the environment — never pour it down a drain or onto soil. Pre-Reassembly Dry Time
Before you reassemble the suppressor and fire it, make sure every part is completely dry. Residual solvent inside the can on first fire can cause unexpected pressure events, alter point-of-impact, or accelerate finish damage. Air-dry on a clean towel for at least 30 minutes after wiping. Compressed air is faster if you have it. Reassemble in the original orientation per the manufacturer’s instructions, and confirm the can is fully torqued before going back to the range.
