Which Rimfire Rugged Suppressor Should You Run?

An Oculus vs Mustang suppression review shows comparable, but slightly divergent results.

The Oculus 22 has established a strong reputation for its suppression efficiency across multiple hosts. In testing by PEW Science, the Oculus 22 produced extremely competitive results, measuring around 116–117 dB in full-length configuration and approximately 123–124 dB in short configuration, maintaining impressive suppression for its reduced size.

The Mustang 22 is tuned for similar sound performance but prioritizes weight savings. Qualitative data places the Mustang within 2–3 dB of the Oculus in comparable configurations.

In both long and short modes, the Mustang delivers consistent tone and smooth blowback behavior, with slightly sharper pitch due to the aluminum internal geometry.

Both suppressors boast a remarkably quiet First Round Pop (FRP), the momentary loud crack that occurs on the first shot. In their long configurations, the Oculus and Mustang exhibit virtually no FRP, while the short modes have a minor, but still subdued, pop.

While the Rugged Oculus edges ahead very slightly in raw decibel reduction due to its all-stainless baffle stack, the Mustang keeps competitive with its agility and weight distribution.

Handling, Size & Weight Trade-Offs

One of the biggest distinctions between these two suppressors is how their materials affect balance and handling.

Switching the Oculus 22 from full to short configuration cuts down about 2.6 ounces, a meaningful reduction for rimfire pistols. On lightweight hosts like the Ruger 22/45 or Browning Buckmark, users will notice a bit of forward weight, but this mass helps tame muzzle rise and provides a softer shooting experience with minimal point-of-impact shift.

The Mustang 22, at just 3.3 ounces full-length and 2.4 ounces (short configuration), is roughly half the weight of the Oculus. The difference is immediately noticeable, particularly on small-framed rimfire pistols or rifles designed for field carry. It handles like an extension of the barrel, keeping balance close to the shooter’s hand and reducing fatigue during long shooting sessions.

From a maintenance and durability perspective, stainless steel offers superior ease for cleaning and long-term abuse. The Oculus can withstand aggressive solvents and ultrasonic cleaners while the Mustang’s aluminum baffles require gentler cleaning methods to avoid surface damage or pitting. Rugged designed both to be fully user-serviceable, but owners should tailor cleaning approaches to the material’s tolerance.

Materials, Durability & User Serviceability

The Rugged Oculus 22 is built entirely from 17-4 stainless steel, a tough material resistant to corrosion. Its baffles are keyed for precise alignment, ensuring reliable stacking and repeatable point-of-impact shift even after heavy cleaning or long shooting intervals. The result is a suppressor that can handle tens of thousands of rounds, even in full-auto or belt-fed .22LR configurations. Rugged also rates it for higher-pressure calibers like .22 WMR and 5.7×28, giving it a clear edge for use on platforms chambered in those rounds.

The Rugged Mustang 22 takes a different path. Its 7075 aluminum tube and baffles significantly reduce overall weight, while the Grade 5 titanium mount adds strength where it’s needed most. This hybrid design is ideal for rimfire shooters focused on carry weight and balance. However, aluminum components can show more wear over time, especially under aggressive cleaning or abrasive carbon buildup. The Mustang’s longevity will depend more on user maintenance habits and round count.

Both use Rugged’s ADAPT modular system, allowing users to unscrew the front module to switch between long and short configurations in seconds. The threading and mount interface are robust and repeatable, meaning zero shift even after multiple disassemblies.
