Rimfire CategoryFor some enthusiasts, choosing the correct suppressor(s) for their firearm(s) is an overwhelming endeavor. With so many manufacturers and cans to pick from in the six main categories, deciding which option is best for your purpose might seem daunting… Have no fear, Silencer Shop is here to help! In this first installment of our series breaking down the different silencer classifications, we focus on the rimfire category of suppressors to help you answer the question: Which .22 silencer do I need?

Rimfire Overview

An abundance of people get their proverbial silencer feet wet by purchasing a .22 option as their first suppressor. Generally, these units are as close to “Hollywood” quiet as possible and are easy to use and maintain. Another notable rimfire perk is their overall affordability, with most options being under $400. Effective and budget-friendly… Thank you, rimfire cans!

Key Rimfire Features

In addition to offering attractive price points, rimfire models are also a highly-convenient choice because all .22 silencers are threaded for the American standard 1/2x28 tpi. This category-wide characteristic allows for simple attachment to a variety of .22 caliber host firearms. Moreover, nearly all current rimfire units are able to be disassembled for cleaning purposes. Since these models deal with dirty and pesky .22 ammunition, this feature is a godsend after a busy day at the gun range. To that point, there are three common types of internal designs for rimfire suppressors:

  • K-baffle: some of the quietest rimfire designs available; multiple pieces can be slightly more difficult to maintain
  • Monocore: convenience of one-piece build; often noticeable first round pop (FRP); super-easy to clean
  • Shielded baffle stack: baffles are shrouded and lock into each other; divert lead buildup from tube; quieter FRP; easy to disassemble

Each rimfire silencer that we carry comes apart for general maintenance; however, the level of easiness varies between units. For all intents and purposes, the monocore and interlocking baffle suppressors are easier to service than K-baffle options. Rimfire models are generally constructed using one (or a combination) of three durable materials: titanium, stainless steel, and aluminum. If silencer weight and maneuverability are top priorities in selecting a can, either a titanium or aluminum unit is your huckleberry. On the other hand, if sturdiness and reliability are important, stainless steel or titanium options should be on your shortlist.
